Drugless Relief From Shingles Pain             (Post-Herpetic Neuralgia)

   Whatever you call it… you’ve likely discovered that treatment options are scarce and ineffective.  Many people are prescribed antidepressants, anticonvulvants and lidocaine patches.  Others patients are given painkillers or electrical stimulation.  If the rash is treated immediately, the anti-viral drug, Acyclovir may help.  But if you’re reading this article, you’ve probably had post-herpetic neuralgia for a long time.

   Shingles usually starts with painful skin blisters along the course of a nerve.  It’s caused by the varicella-zoster virus.  This virus lurks dormant in your nervous system after you’ve had chicken pox.  But it doesn’t usually rear its ugly head as Shingles until after age 50, when for various reasons, your immune system may become weakened.  Physical and/or emotional trauma can cause the varicella-zoster virus to become reactivated.   Cancer patients, particularly if they are on chemotherapy are susceptible to Shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia.  The same is true for people taking long-term immune-suppressive drugs.    

   Western medicine has not shown much success with post-herpetic neuralgia.  Perhaps a treatment approach that is geared towards strengthening your immune system would be your best option.
